Pt100 Resistance Thermometers Introduction

Pt100 Resistance thermometers also referred to as pt100 temperature sensors are used to measure the temperature of a medium. A pt100 is made up of a sensor inserted into an insert which can be inserted into the process or medium of which the temperature needs to be measured. The temperature at the tip of the pt100 sensor will have a specific resistance which corresponds to a particular Ohm resistance. This Ohm resistance can be translated to a temperature in a linear fashion. That’s why pt100’s often referred to as resistance thermometers or RTD pt100’s.  pt-100 resistance thermometers with various configurations, which can be chosen to suit your application.Pt100 Resistance thermometers also referred to as pt100 temperature sensors are used to measure the temperature of a medium. A pt100 is a type of resistance thermometers. This name might reveal a lot already because a resistance thermometer measures temperature using electrical resistance. So a pt100 resistance thermometer is one type of temperature sensor. A temperature sensor, in general, provides for temperature measurement through an electrical signal. It measures the temperature or heat on the operating machine part. As you can imagine, temperatures can rise high when it comes to machines. That’s why it’s crucial to keep track of this. That’s also the reason why temperature sensors are commonly used devices. They come in a lot of different forms, also called models. Out of these, the pt100 resistance thermometer is one of the most popular ones.

A pt1000 is a type of resistance thermometer. Just like the pt100, this resistance thermometer measures temperature using electrical resistance. Pt100 Resistance Thermometers Application

The choice of Pt100 or Pt1000 depends on the application. In the process industry, Pt100 sensors are much more popular than Pt1000s for two reasons:

  • A Pt100 sensor comes in both wire-wound and thin-film versions, whereas Pt1000 sensors are almost always only thin-film.

  • Because it is so popular worldwide, a Pt100 sensor is compatible with a wider range of instruments and processes than the Pt1000.

Where the Pt1000 makes more sense is when the cable length is long, as its overall measuring error is a fraction of that of the Pt100. Also with battery-operated RTDs, the higher nominal resistance of the Pt1000 sensor has a positive effect on the energy balance of the instrument. As a result, those batteries enjoy a longer service life, meaning longer maintenance intervals and reduced service costs.

Numerous industries rely on the accuracy, reliability, and fast response times of Pt100 RTDs. Contact our electronic temperature measurement (ETM) specialists for more information on which resistance thermometers are right for your specific applications.
